Dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that completely covers the visible tooth surface up to the gum line. Crowns can be used to treat weak, broken, crooked, discolored or severely worn down teeth. Dental crowns restore the natural appearance of teeth, make teeth stronger and increase their ability to function normally. You can solve dental cosmetic problems and get brilliant smile and completely natural-looking teeth with Crown treatment.
There are three different types of crowns such as zirconium, E-Max and metal porcelain available, choosing the right crown depends on where the crown will be placed and of course your preference and budget.
Zirconium crowns consist of a white based metal core with porcelain fused to the outside. The advantage of Zirconium Crown is that if the gums recede over time, a black line will never be seen(as in a porcelain crown). The crown will always appear white at the gumline. Zirconium porcelain crowns are the most preferred type of crowns in terms of aesthetics and durability.
E-Max crowns are made from a top-grade material known as lithium disilicate ceramic. E-max crowns have incredible translucency and look like natural teeth. The main reasons why E-max crowns are popular is because they are the strongest, most natural looking and durable. Since the E-max crowns do not contain metal, metal line (black line) is not seen even if the patient has gumline recession. E-max crowns provide most natural-looking appearance compared to other types of crowns.
Porcelain crowns consist of porcelain fused to the outside and a silver-based metal core. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are more affordable than other ceramic crowns. Metal based porcelain crowns are ideal for use at the teeth located at the back of the mouth (posterior teeth). If your budget is tight, Metal/Porcelain Crowns can also be used on front teeth (anterior teeth), but if your gums recede over time, you may see a black line above your gum line when you smile. For this reason, we generally do not recommend metal/porcelain crowns for front teeth.
