What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure. This procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, which involves inserting small instruments through multiple small incisions in the upper abdomen. During sleeve gastrectomy, approximately 80% of the stomach is removed. Gastric Sleeve surgery helps to patient lose weight in two ways:
1.Hormonal way: Ghrelin is a hormone that sends signals from stomach to brain and induces a feel of hunger. Since the part that produces ghrelin hormone is removed from the stomach, urge to eat is greatly reduced.
2.Restrictive way: As the stomach volume shrinks, less food and calories will be taken, so weight loss occurs. The patient’s stomach is significantly smaller after the operation so they will feel satiated sooner.

How Gastric Sleeve Surgery is performed ?

Gastric Sleeve surgery is performed under general anesthesia and it is done laparoscopically which is a closed method. During the procedure, the abdominal wall is not cut out, the operation is performed with special surgical instruments with a camera attached on the tip. In this way, recovery after surgery is faster. In laparoscopical surgeries muscle tissue is not cut or damaged, therefore patient does not experience much pain after the surgery and pain is minimized by giving painkillers to the patient after the surgery. The surgery usually takes 2 hours. After the operation, the patient rests in the recovery room and the health status is monitored by surgeon and nurses.

How much weight can be lost with Gastric Sleeve ?
Gastric sleeve surgery patients will lose 60% of their excess weight in approximately one and a half years. Rapid weight loss may occur within the first three months after surgery. The reason for this is that the patient is fed with liquid and puree after surgery. Although the weight loss rate of the patient slows down after three months, the weight loss process will continue for up to two years.
It is very important that patients follow the surgeon’s and dietician’s instructions after surgery. We recommend exercising along with the diet plan.
