Teeth Whitening, also called bleaching, is a stain removal process that restores the original color of the tooth in a very short time and whitens the appearance of your teeth. Whitening is the least damaging and most conservative technique for whitening natural teeth without removing the tooth surface. With bleaching, only natural teeth can be whitened (veneers, crowns and bridges cannot be whitened).
Teeth whitening result lasts, on average, for between 6 months and 2 years depending on the tooth structure of the person and remains stable. During and after bleaching colored liquids such as tea, coffee, wine, cola and tobacco products should be avoided.
There are two types of whitening procedure: In-Office Teeth Whitening and Home Teeth Whitening. Both are based on a bleaching process using peroxide-based gel.
In-Office Teeth Whitening is an immediate solution for stain problems performed at the clinic by experienced dentist. Firstly, dentist cleans the surface of the teeth, and gum barrier gel applied to protects the gums and soft tissue during whitening teeth. Then hydrogen peroxide-based gel is applied onto the teeth. Hydrogen peroxide-based gel is much more intense than household teeth whitening, and teeth whitening gel contains 35-45% active ingredient. After the gel is applied to the teeth, it is exposed to special light and this process takes approximately 1 hour. With the office-type bleaching method, more efficient results can be obtained in terms of smile design.
At-Home Teeth Whitening is a procedure that can be applied by the patient at home, but still requires a visit to the dental clinic to get the trays specially prepared for the patient. The patient’s mouth is measured and the whitening trays are prepared by dentist. In accordance with the instructions of the dentist, the whitening gel is placed on the whitening trays at home by the patient. The patient wear them for a few hours each day. Also patient can sleep wearing this trays. This treatment takes an average of 2-3 weeks. If more than the recommended amount of gel is used, the gel will overflow and damage the gums. In such a case, the gel should be removed from the gums and the patient should contact their doctor immediately.
